What This Error Means
The brand attribute tells Google who manufactures or produces the product. This is essential for product matching, search relevance, and resolving Google Merchant Center feed errors.
Brand is required when:
- The product has a clearly associated brand or manufacturer
- You're reselling branded products
- The brand is visible on product packaging
Invalid brand values include:
- Generic terms like "Generic", "Unknown", "N/A", or "None"
- Your store name for products you don't manufacture
- Product categories instead of brand names
- Special characters or placeholder text
How to Fix It
- Identify the actual brand — Check product packaging, manufacturer information, or supplier data for the correct brand name.
- Use exact brand spelling — Use the official brand name as it appears on the product (e.g., "Nike" not "NIKE" or "nike").
- For your own products — If you manufacture the product, use your company/brand name as the brand.
- For unbranded products — Use your store brand or set
identifier_existsto "no" for truly generic items. - Request brand data from suppliers — Include brand as a required field in your supplier data imports.
